ST PETERSBURG SPRING 2009


Saint Petersburg, the fourth largest city in Europe by population is also the cultural capital of Russia. Founded in 1703 by Peter the Great it fast became the centre of the social and art world and competed with Paris and London until the revolution. Summer or winter, day or night, there is plenty to do, see and experience. The city is host to 221 museums and 80 theatres including the world-renowned Marriinsky Theatre. There is a thriving alternative scene and nightlife that will attract all tastes, ages and life styles.

Hermitage current exhibitions

23 November 2008 - 29 March 2009. Heraldry on Russian Porcelain - The Christmas Gift Series.

9th December 2008 – 5thApril 2009.  The Caves of a Thousand Buddhas,  expeditions on the Silk Route.   More than 300 items including sculptures, wall painting fragments, wood cuts, manuscripts and expedition photographs & maps from Russian explorers travelling the Silk Route.  Many items are displayed for the first time.  
 
20th March 2009 – 28th June 2009. Boris Smelov, retrospective of St Petersburgphotography of 70-80’s.

At the Peter & Paul Fortress an exhibition Trubezkoi Bastion presentsA History of the Main Political Prison 1872 - 1921. Objects and photos show the life of political prisoners. Until11th December 2009.

Academy of Arts Gallery permanent and temporary exhibitions of Saint-Petersburg artists.

Mariinsky Theatre  
 
20th February - artist of the month - Denis Matsuev playingTchaikovsky, Rakhmaninov and Shostakovich. Conductor - Valery Gergiev. Mariinsky Concert Hall.  
 
23rd February, 5th Festival Maslenitsa opens at the Mariinsky Theatre with the concert by Moscow Virtuosi. Festival 23rd February to 1st March 2009.  
 
14th – 22nd March 2009. IX International Ballet Festival Mariinsky. Artistic director of the Festival - Valery Gergiev.
