Events&Cultural programs St Petersburg


Saint Petersburg, the fourth largest city in Europe by population is also the cultural capital of Russia. Founded in 1703 by Peter the Great it fast became the centre of the social and art world and competed with Paris and London until the revolution.  

Summer or Winter, day or night, there is plenty to do, see and experience. The city is host to 221 museums and 80 theatres including the world-renowned Marriinsky Theatre that is entering its 225th season. But there is a thriving alternative scene and nightlife that will attract all tastes and ages and life styles. 

We follow events in the city that can be of interest for you: 

Hermitage exhibitions

14 February 2008 - 7 September 2008. In Palaces and Tents. The Islamic World from China to Europe celebrates the debt Islamic art owes to China in the East and the design heritage it passed on to Europe the West. A major exhibition in the Nikolaievsky Hall.

June 20th Gala Banquet in the Winter Palace, St. Petersburg. This is the Hermitage annual fundraising extravaganza, once more to raise money for the renovation of the General Staff Building and its conversion into a museum of 19th, 20th and 21st century art.

In Kunstkamera founded by Peter I natural and human curiosities and rarities are exhibited. Temporary exhibitions are The Land of Incense (Yemen: images of traditional culture), Interpretation of traditional Africa (photos), Petersburg land natives.

In Naval Museum on Spit of Vasilievsky island one can see Imperial yachts as well as 2 thousand models of old and modern ships, 5 thousand pictures of boats, more than 3.5 thousand flags and banners, weapons, sea devices and maps.

Academy of Arts Gallery permanently holds exhibitions of Saint-Petersburg artists.

Mariinsky Theatre

Festival of White nights started in Mariinsky Theatre on 11th May.
